On July l4, 2006 the Chesapeake Region drove wounded American vets from Iraq at the Bethesda Naval Hospital to the Marine Barracks evening parade. Unfortunately the original plan was to have cars pick up vets also at Walter Reed, but at the last moment that portion was cancelled because a golf outing that day kept participants from the evening event.
The pre-parade reception included great food with treats created by the Marines. General Gardner gave warm thanks to our members for our efforts for the wounded vets. Special seats were provided for our members, and the parade was spectacular as usual, with music by the President’s own band and the Commandant’s Drum and Bugle Corps.
The rifle unit is always fun to see and this time a tossed rifle went to far and was missed by the unit member, a very unusual happening.
Brenda and I treated the vets to desert after the parade at our favorite spot on Capitol Hill, Park Cafe. Brenda and I look forward to next year’s parade where hopefully we can again participate.
